MIRROR VISIONS ENSEMBLE ANNOUNCES INAUGURAL YOUNG COMPOSERS COMPETITION

The Mirror Visions Ensemble, a chamber music vocal trio featuring soprano Vira Slywotzky, tenor Scott Murphree, baritone Jesse Blumberg and co-founded by Artistic Director Tobé Malawista, is pleased to announce their inaugural Young Composers Competition

This competition is intended to encourage the next generation of composers to continue developing the catalogue of vocal chamber music as well as continuing Mirror Visions’ legacy of commissioning, performing and recording new works.  Composers ages 35 and younger who are living, working or studying in the U.S. are invited to submit two existing, contrasting vocal compositions, not to exceed six minutes in length total. Up to four winners will be chosen by a panel; each winner will receive a $1,500 commission for a new work from the Mirror Visions Ensemble, with a premiere by the ensemble in an upcoming season. The text and instrumentation (one, two or three voices and piano) of commission will be determined by Mirror Visions.

Since its inception in 1992, the Mirror Visions Ensemble’s work has figured prominently around performing and commissioning musical “mirror visions” – multiple settings of the same text by one or more composers.  What began as an idea built around programs of poets such as Dickinson, Heine, Shakespeare and Verlaine has since expanded to include the commissioning of over 80 works from 17 composers whose creative compositions are based on insightful texts. The ensemble has released two albums of commissioned works, with a third disc forthcoming this year.

In past seasons, the ensemble has presented its unique programs and residencies both in the U.S. and abroad, including Northwestern University, the Longy School of Music, New York City’s Weill Recital Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, New York University, Le Poisson Rouge and SubCulture, Mt. Kisco’s Usdan Center, Brooklyn’s Bargemusic, South County Concerts Chamber Music Series and three venues on tour in Montana.  This season, the ensemble embarked on their first West Coast tour with performances in San Francisco, Fullerton, Newport Beach and Pasadena. Over time, museums in France have become a home for Mirror Visions, including eight performances at the Musée Carnavalet featuring a program based on the letters of Madame de Sévigné.  La Salle des Boiseries at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, which rarely presents live performance, is also a frequent performance space as is the Musée Nissim de Camondo and American University of Paris.
