Pianist Shai Wosner and the Parker Quartet conclude their two-part series exploring Schubert's unique compositional world and his influence on contemporary composers. NY Philharmonic's principal double bassist,Timothy Cobb joins them for a night of Schubert's and Kurtag's music.

Mr. Wosner and the Parker Quartet worked with Hungarian composer György Kurtág and understand his musical attributes and influences. Their unique presentation of alternating movements from Kurtag’s and Schubert's Moments musicaux will reveal astonishing relationships within both men’s artistic spirit.

According to Mr. Wosner, "Schubert's sense of time has a certain duality to it— almost a kind of a Schubert Effect—that makes it seem as if time is somehow magically both moving and suspended. This expansiveness is in the very nature of Schubert's music, regardless of duration. It can be felt from bar to bar and in the moment, as the music unfolds with a spontaneity that doesn’t tell us if a piece will last five minutes or fifty."

The effect Schubert and his music has had on musicians and music-lovers resounds through the centuries. Six artists who thrive on the collaborative process share his effect on them with some of Schubert’s best-loved works, including the magnificent “Trout” Quintet.

FROM FOLKLORE TO MODERNITY

As part of a series of three concerts, “Hsin-Yun & Friends,” violist Hsin-Yun Huang curates programs with focused presentations in mind. For this concert, Ms. Huang brings aboard violinist Miriam Fried and the young Israeli violinist Kobi Malkin, who is a member of Ensemble ACJW and a former student of Ms. Fried, to portray how integral folk music was for Central European composers to write classical music.

For more than 100 years, Eastern European composers have mined their native folk musical traditions for inspiration. How each composer has used that raw material has fascinated music lovers for just as long, varying their treatments with the times, regions and personal visions. This concert demonstrates the different ways that musical folk tradition has inspired musical modernism.

LEON FLEISHER: LIVING THROUGH MUSIC

Legendary pianist Leon Fleisher represents the gold standard of musicianship and, at 85 years young, he continues to impart his life-affirming artistry throughout the world, thriving in a sustained career as conductor and soloist, recitalist, chamber music artist, and master class mentor.

For the third in a series of three conversations, he sits down with his son Julian Fleisher to discuss Schubert’s special place in his world, exploring the master’s life and career through the lens of the music he loves.

Leon Fleisher's recordings of solo piano music, chamber music, and concertos are considered as a standard reference for aspiring pianists, and in 2008, he was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.  His latest CD, All the Things You Are, has been nominated for a Grammy Award this year.

One of the foremost pianists of our time, Sir András Schiff has chosen three young,accomplished pianists to present a new generation of great musicians in a new series in New York and Berlin. 

Born in Macau, Kuok-Wai Lio studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and has been working regularly with Sir András at the International Musicians Seminar Prussia Cove and other European festivals. He has given recitals in the US, Canada, Japan, Germany and Italy. In 2004 he performed for the President of China.

MARC-ANDRE HAMELIN

As part of his international tour this season, Marc-Andre Hamelin performs at 92Y for his only solo recital in New York. Hamelin honors the rich tradition of the pianist-composer with a program of works by composers who had great success at the keyboard.

Franz Liszt may be the most iconic pianist-composer of all, and Hamelin is a Liszt specialist, playing his often fiendishly difficult music with astonishing ease. Hamelin also thrives on reviving the unjustly obscure, so he opens with music of the Irish Romantic John Field. And Hamelin himself continues the composer-pianist tradition, presenting his Chaconne (inspired naturally by Bach’s Chaconne) to New York for the first time.

Internationally beloved opera star Deborah Voigt shares memories and music from her celebrated career, in an intimate account of her life beyond the velvet curtains in the New York City premiere of her confessional one-woman show, Voigt Lessons. She performs arias, pop songs, standards and spirituals that have special meaning for her, including Strauss’s "Zueignung," Mancini’s “ Moon River,” The Carpenters’ hit, "A Song for You," and much more.

Through anecdotes and backstage stories, she describes her astonishing rise to the operatic heights despite the challenges she faced in private, in an evening imbued with her trademark warmth, candor, and sense of humor.

JASON VIEAUX, GUITAR & YOLANDA KONDONASSIS, HARP:

NYC DEBUT DUO PERFORMANCE

The esteemed guitar and harp duo, Jason Vieaux and Yolanda Kondonassis, makes their NYC debut performance at 92Y to provide an inspiring mix of new and exciting sounds.

The program includes original works for harp and guitar, such as Alan Hovhaness' Spirit of Trees, Xavier Montsalvatge's Fantasia, Máximo Diego Pujol's Suite Magica, and two New York premieres commissioned by the duo: Knock on Wood (2012) by Keith Fitch and Hypnotized (2013) by Gary Schocker. 

On January 27, Ms. Kondonassis and Mr. Vieaux release a new album entitled Together, featuring works heard on this concert's program. This is the first record collaboration between the two artists. The disc marks Kondonassis' 19th album in a recording career that has been recognized with a Grammy Award nomination, and broken boundaries with hundreds of thousands of discs and downloads sold worldwide.

Jason Vieaux’s solo album Play has been nominated for a 2015 Grammy Award in the Best Classical Instrumental Solo category. Released on Azica Records in January 2014, the album includes showpieces by Barrios, Sagreras, Bustamante, and Sainz De La Maza, Tárrega’s classics Recuerdos de la Alhambra and Capricho Arabe, Vieaux’s own in-demand arrangement of Duke Ellington’s In A Sentimental Mood, and Andrew York’s popular Sunburst.

Benjamin Verdery, artistic director of 92Y’s Art of the Guitar series and chair of Yale’s guitar department, will be giving a pre-concert talk at 7 pm, featuring guest composer Keith Fitch.
