KREMERATA BALTICA

Founded and led by internationally renowned violinist Gidon Kremer, chamber orchestra Kremerata Baltica is comprised of twenty-four young players from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Since 1997, it has commissioned new works and performed new arrangements of existing works in over fifty countries. The orchestra’s wide-ranging and carefully chosen repertoire is showcased in its more than twenty discs, for which the ensemble won the 2002 GRAMMY Award in the category of Best Small Ensemble. The ensemble's exclusive New York appearance this season at 92Y recognizes the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten with Arvo Pärt's Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten and Britten's Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge. Two compositions by Polish/ Russian composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg demonstrate the strong mentoring influence Shostakovich played in his compositional style. Joined by Russian bass Alexei Mochalov, the group presents Shostakovich's political satire opera written after the official denunciation of his music and comments on the music thought to be "acceptable" by the Soviet system.
